Early summer on Texel
June is beautiful on Texel. Nature shows its finest side, and the island is buzzing with (cultural) activities. Here are some great tips for your holiday on Texel.
Village Bike Tour
The ideal way to get to know Texel: cycling through the villages. Along the way, you'll discover how diverse the Texel landscape is, with blonde dunes, wide polders, and bird-rich meadows. How many villages you can or want to visit depends on how many kilometers you'd like to cycle. You can start anywhere, of course. You can also do multiple village tours. In all the villages (except De Waal), you can rent (electric) bikes. Maybe you let the wind direction determine your village route. Often, a west wind blows. That's why the sheep sheds are also tilted toward the west, offering great shelter!
Southern Loop
A lovely ride of about 2 to 2.5 hours (without stops) takes you through the southern part of Texel. From the forest to Den Hoorn, on to ’t Horntje, along the new Prins Hendrikdijkpolder to the harbor of Oudeschild. Then, travel over the Hoge Berg to Den Burg and on to De Koog, cycling through the forest back to the starting point at Rozendijk (Vakantiehuizen Texel).
Part of this route runs through the Texel Dunes National Park. From the forest, you'll cycle along beautiful dune areas such as Pieter Rozenvlak and Bollekamer, where you can enjoy a lovely walk. Den Hoorn, the southernmost village of Texel, has cozy streets with beautiful buildings and many studios. It's nice to cycle or walk through there. On the way to the ferry port, you can spot various meadow birds. From ’t Horntje to Oudeschild, you'll ride along a new section of nature outside the dike. To reinforce the dike, a sandy dike with high natural value was chosen. The lagoon off the coast is a breeding and foraging site for many bird species. A part of the expansive beach is also accessible to visitors.
Harbor Buzz
There’s always something happening around harbors, and Oudeschild is no different! Fishing boats coming in, tour boats docking, and pleasure yachts cruising into the harbor. From Oudeschild, cycle towards Den Burg via the Hoge Berg. It might sound like a steep climb, but “this hill” is only 15 meters above sea level. It's a cultural-historical area where you’ll come across typical Texel phenomena such as tuunwallen (grass sod fences) and sheepfolds. It's also the perfect spot to spot playful lambs in the meadows. In Den Burg, you'll find a fun mix of shops. Well-known franchise stores, but also cute boutiques and small shops that give the center its charm.
Seaside Resort De Koog
If you continue cycling to De Koog, you'll notice it's a true seaside resort. Everything here breathes the beach. No wonder, since there's only a dune row between the village and the vast North Sea beach. Recommendation: park your bike and enjoy lunch at one of the beach pavilions! Via the forest, cycle back to Rozendijk. Along the way, you’ll pass the turnoff to Paal 17. Especially during the famous Ronde om Texel, this is the place to be. It’s a colorful spectacle in and on the water. Not only catamarans launch here for their round of the island, but also windsurfers take on the waves.
